Summertime

Since my last real diary entry I’ve had cocktails in far-flung and fabulous places ranging from Kobe Beach in East Hampton to The Surf Lodge in Montauk to The Talk House in Amagansett to Sunset Beach in Shelter Island to The Straight Wharf in Nantucket to the port in Portofino and the hills of Tuscany.

First I’ll start with the dinner at Kobe Beach in East Hampton, because the event took place just this past Saturday night and, thanks to a severe case of early onset Alzheimer’s coupled with one too many mojitos, it is the one event I can still clearly remember.

As you can see from the photos, I was lucky enough to have drop-dead handsome Jaime Jimenez as my co-host, who agreed to help decorate with his amazing collection of Baccarat crystal which made for a gorgeous soiree. We decided to host the party at The Kobe Beach Club restaurant in East Hampton. Kobe not only has the most delicious food in town, but also such great music that it’s hard not to want to get up and dance on the table… and thanks to the tunes plus our delicious Flor De Caña firecracker cocktails, we almost did.

Our party guests were some of NYC’s chicest and most beautiful citizens, who more importantly also happen to be the most fun. Just to name a few of the lovely ladies who wore HOLLYWOULD, there was Gigi Stone, Alina Cho, Rory Hermelee, Lydia Fenet, Christine Cachot, Blaire Clarke, Susan Shin, Elisabeth Saint Amande, and Lily Anna Arteaga, and some of the handsome men included Quinn Pohfal, Chris Delaney, Micheal Foggio, Casey Fahey and Alistair Clarke. Big shout out to everyone who came and thank you for being so fabulous and making the party so much fun!

On other summer nights I’ve had great times doing things like riding 20 miles on bikes to Montauk for a BBQ with pals Leslie Smith and Danielle Levitt, only to end up at The Surf Lodge for sunset drinks that lead to midnight drinks that lead to hitchhiking home, incapable of biking in a straight line. Later there was a wild night that began at one of the Hampton’s most chic venues, Townline BBQ, and ended at one of the Hampton’s other incredibly glamorous locales, The Talk House, which is a great spot to go if you need to make up for any missed frat parties in college.

One summer evening I hit up the movie premiere for Woody Allen’s new hit Vicky Christina Barcelona with pals Kate Schelter and Valeria McCulloch, and it is one of the funniest movies of the year. Penelope Cruz (who I met in the bathroom that evening) absolutely steals the show and the dialog is as good as any of Woody Allen’s greatest hits. It’s a must-see for everyone but my mom, who thinks The Little Mermaid needs to put on some clothes.

Another fun premier was for the movie Bottle Shock, which will be a big hit with California wine lovers as it covers an important bit of Napa Valley wine history. From the theater all of the guests headed to a Domaine Chandon wine tasting and dinner, which is a great way to guarantee fabulous reviews. After three glasses of amazing vin blanc, I gave the movie a solid two thumbs up.

I also took a quick trip to Portofino, Italy with my Parisian pal Polina Aronova, where we soaked in the sun all day and champagne all night (with Steffano Gabanna and Domenico Dolce, no less), all while looking molto elegante in our Eres bikinis and HOLLYWOULD jeweled gladiator sandals. Ahhhhh, the sea, the sun, the seafood, and the sailors… From Portofino I headed for another glamorous weekend in Tuscany with Italian co-conspirator Jasmine Sforni, where we sipped local Chianti and watched the sun set over the hills of Toscana. There is no substitute for Italy in the summer.

Every summer has its highlight, and although summer is not yet over and all of the above has been absolutely fabulous, the topper of the season had to be watching The Boston Pops play live under the stars on the beach in Nantucket. As much as I do love Italy, there is no place like home, and nothing more American than a summer concert on a picnic blanket on the beach in Nantucket, American flags waving, “New York, New York” playing, and a firework finale.

My partners in crime for the Nantucket weekend were Sarah Dallaire, Jen Bell, Devon Wilson, and Julia Rodgers, and we didn’t leave a stone unturned or a bar unvisited on the entire island. Within minutes of our arrival we hit the town and realized they would not let us in to any of the bars without proper identification. Since we have all been of legal age for a full five years, we had left our IDs in our luggage. Rather than walk back to the hotel to retrieve said IDs, we decided the better idea was to find the good old fashion kind of place that isn’t uptight about serving minors. Of course, this meant heading directly to Straight Wharf, where the boy/girl ratio is 90/10, and the average age is 19 (with a Michigan “ID” that says 24).

The rest of the weekend consisted of recovering with bike rides, lobster rolls, beach days, and rounds of Goombay Smashes at The Charter House, and was such an ideal vacation that we may just have to do it again next year. Big ups to the girls!
